It has been a busy summer! Every week I would think "This will be the week I can get something written for The Book Cover, then the week would end and I had not had time to put my thoughts together!! Oh, well, as I often have been heard to say... Man works from sun to sun, but LIBRARIAN'S WORK is never done!
Seems like we'll never be done with copyright challenges. No matter how long we wait, there will always be a new need for interpretation. I was struck again by that fact when I read this article http://www.inrich.com/cva/ric/search.apx.-content-articles-RTD-2008-08-08-0145.html about the University of Virginia senior who got kicked out of the special class/course she was in on board a ship just before the course ended.
The article does not give quite enough details to know if the action on the part of the authorities was warranted or not, but my lesson was the reminder that ignorance is not a good enough excuse when it comes to copyright law, so it behooves me to keep up on the major points... especially as the campus copyright officer.
A couple of years ago I wrote a new and expanded copyright policy for the library and the research I had to do really helped me, but I find that every month that goes by that I do not get a copyright question from a faculty or staff member is another step towards forgetting the importance of knowing the basics, if nothing else. This is an area I need to stay in tune with so I am not "stale." Ignorance cannot be my excuse... ever.
