I recently read about a survey done last year to find out what kinds of personalized advertising various age groups would like to have. The survey was done as a result of the newest information on the current generation, which, it is said, likes personalized services.
The 18 to 24-year-old group results showed that their top three categories of preferences was music, DVDs and BOOKS, in that order.
In the 50+ age group, the preferences were BOOKS, travel and TV/movies, in that order.
I was not really surprised at the results of the 50+ group, but I must admit I was pleasantly surprised to find books in the younger generation's top three list. We hear so much about how the internet and other web-based services are taking over, and that print media is getting lost in the shuffle, that one would think that libraries and bookstores are going away. But then we hear about a survey such as this (not done by a book-based business, by the way), and I am reminded that books will NEVER disappear. And the mission of the library to provide print media-based information as well as electronic-based information is still on target.
We are here to stay!
