So much is going to happen at the Fleece Library this year! I'm nervous at times over being the place where the buck stops, but then I think about how fortunate I am to be the Library Director overseeing such big improvements.
1. We will be getting a new, vastly improved library computer system by the end of the year. The new system will allow us to do away with the check out cards that have to be signed. Check out will be automated, as will overdue notices and notices of items awaiting pick-up. And so many more special features that will make our library catalog much more enjoyable to use! Patrons will be able to renew their own items online, request items online, keep track of their reading/research, and many other features currently unavailable.
2. We will be able to participate in the new statewide delivery system, PASCAL Delivers. Our patrons will have access to the South Carolina virtual library, a listing of over 12 million items held in almost 60 South Carolina academic libraries. You'll be able to request a book one day and have it delivered within 72 hours from any place in the state. Interlibrary loan will still be available, but seeing as it usually takes about three weeks to get something via ILL, I think PASCAL Delivers will be very beneficial!
3. Our new computer system will make it possible to see the current status of each item in the library... is it on the shelf, on order, checked out, when is it due back? What a nice benefit for our Fleece Library patrons!
I'd better stop for now and save some excitement for later. But I must say that PASCAL, Partnership Among South Carolina Libraries, is a consortium I am mighty glad we are a part of. This consortium has been a life-saver for the Fleece Library in many ways, including making electronic databases affordable for us and helping us get ready for PASCAL Delivers.
