I read a disturbing news item yesterday from the State newspaper... according to the report, the University of South Carolina leads the nation in number of copyright infringement notices received from the Recording Industry Association of America. The association has sent 914 notices of copyright infringement for illegally downloaded songs to the university this year. That is one of the highest in the nation. Clemson received 71 notices this school year and Furman had 45.
I have not heard anything about CIU, but I am hoping that means that our students have more respect for copyright legalities than their peers down the road.
It reminds me of one of my "aha" moments last fall when another library director was visiting my office on the library mezzanine and noted that at her library no student would dare do what our students do... go off to lunch or someplace else and leave their laptop computers sitting in a study carrel. It made me realize again what a blessing we have on our not-always-perfect campus... We are more blessed than we tend to remember at times!
